KCAH 503 – Seminar in Art History – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
Topics of limited or special interest in art history, theory, and criticism designed for master of fine arts majors. Enrollment is limited to provide a small class conducive to group participation and presentation of papers.
KCAH 500 – Special Problems:Graduate Art History – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing, faculty approval
KCAH 517 – Contemporary Art – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing, faculty approval
Explores the painting, sculpture, architecture and design of late 20th century and early 21st century fine art. Includes a study of philosophies, beliefs, and changing roles of the artists.
KCFA 500 – Special Problems:Graduate Fine Art – 3 Credits

KCFA 505 – Graduate Seminar – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing, faculty approval; teaching seminar requires 3 credits of KCFA 521.
Seminar dealing with issues relevant to graduate fine artists.
KCFA 510 – Graduate Figure Painting – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing, faculty approval
Offers graduate level instruction in painting the human figure. The course will review issues endemic to the figure, however, special emphasis will be put on individual artistic direction. Compositional and spatial problems will be examined as well as content related issues. Class work should reflect the depth and complexity indicative of graduate study.
KCFA 520 – Graduate Landscape Painting – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing, faculty approval
Offers graduate level instruction on the creative potential of the landscape genre. Classes will emphasize personal artistic direction. Representational and abstract approaches to the landscape will be explored using a variety of media including oil and water-based media. The course will be divided between on-site and studio work. Class work should reflect the depth and complexity indicative of graduate study.
KCFA 521 – Studio Concentration – 3 to 9 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
Emphasizes individually motivated studio activity. The goal is to provide the student an opportunity to develop ideas, themes, and motifs of personal significance and to experiment and master the technical and formal issues of the work. Emphasis will also be placed on the ability to incorporate theoretical and art historical knowledge into the studio work.- Painting Concentration: Emphasis will be put on developing an increasingly complex grasp of paint application, color, composition, and alternative, mixed media processes.
- Drawing Concentration: Competence in all aspects of drawing, including collage, transfer techniques, mixed media drawing, subtractive techniques, and other non-traditional drawing media will be required.
- Photography Concentration: Competence in all aspects of photographic processes, including black and white and color printing, artificial lighting, large format camera use, and non-silver digital imaging will be required.
- Printmaking Concentration: Exploration and mastery of non-toxic and digital printmaking techniques with focus on multi-layered prints and/or the extension in form and concept of the two-dimensional print.
KCFA 535 – Graduate Abstract Painting – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
Offers graduate level instruction in various forms of painterly abstraction with a special emphasis on the combination of traditional and non-traditional materials and processes. Non-objective/formalist painting issues will be developed in conjunction with the student’s individual artistic direction. Class work should reflect the depth and complexity indicative of graduate study.
KCFA 550 – Graduate Concept Development in Painting – 3 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
Offers graduate level instruction in the development of concepts within the context of the painting medium. Graduate students will be encouraged to explore contemporary theories and strategies in conjunction with their personal artistic direction. The course will also review traditional and mixed media approaches to painting with special emphasis on the relationship of form to content. The student will also be required to write an artist statement. Class work should reflect the depth and complexity indicative of graduate study.
KCFA 599 – Independent Study: Graduate Fine Arts – 3 to 9 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
KCFA 623 – Graduate Studio Elective – 3 to 9 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval
Course work chosen from a menu of options in a variety of disciplines that supports the graduate student’s interests. May or may not be in the student’s area of concentration.
KCFA 660 – Thesis II – 3 to 9 Credits
Prerequisites: Postgraduate standing; faculty approval, KCFA 521(18 credits)
Continues the preparation for the master of fine arts exhibition, thesis statement, and final presentation.
