BFA in Art with K-12 certification

Program description

Kendall's Art Education program teaches students to become effective, innovative art teachers for children in grades K - 12. While most colleges confer BS/BA degrees to their art education graduates, Kendall awards its graduates a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree. This designation reflects the breadth and depth of the student's education in art and design.

Our curriculum, which places an emphasis on preparing students for state certification, focuses on the principles and theories in education, learning, and childhood development. The program begins with a series of foundation courses through which students hone basic conceptual and technical skills in design, color, and drawing. These courses also help students develop their visual literacy, heighten their aesthetic sense, refine their critical and analytical thinking, and broaden their understanding of art styles and methods. Students also complete course work in art history as well as liberal arts and sciences. Our intent is to create highly trained teachers who are also fully educated, well-rounded individuals.

We provide core studies in art and, in collaboration with Ferris State University, in professional education. Students receive hands-on training in writing a syllabus and developing class projects; they review basic foundational information; they visit classrooms; and they practice proven methods for teaching art. Beyond their education courses, students have ample time and opportunity to develop their own creative abilities in a wide range of studio classes in drawing, painting, digital media, sculpture, graphic design, metals, jewelry making, and more. This kind of opportunity is rarely found in other art education programs

The Kendall/Ferris faculty includes well respected, experienced professionals in the art education field. Our instructors are committed to making personal connections with each student, taking time to provide one-to-one support whenever it's needed.
