(thankful for) I am constantly humbled and blessed in my relationship with my wife and kids and how Christ has and is transforming my heart.
I am inspired to by music (The Oh Hellos, Andrew Bird, Waterdeep, Hillsong United, and Will Reagan) by visual artists like James Jean, Tomer Hanuka, Egon Schiele. I learn and have ideas sparked through podcast sermons from RadioLab, and The Village Church
Without being “preachy” I sincerely suggest people read the Book of Psalms in the Amplified version of the Bible. I also recommend anyone to read the Ragamuffin Gospel by Brennan Manning.
I resonate with these two poets:
"I am not a smart man, but I know what love is"
"The world is charged with the grandeur of God...
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! Bright wings."
-Gerard Manley Hopkins
I think of several locations I hope to visit, its hard to narrow down it’s a three way tie between New Mexico, Austria and Nepal.
I’ve always had curiosity and interest in the Indigenous or Native American, like the Lakota people. There was an amazingly rich society and culture here prior to European colonization of North America. The books I read (Water Lilly, Tracks, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, Lone Ranger and Tonto: Fistfight in Heaven) really captured my mind and imagination about the life of some native people. I am also grieved at the heartbreaking wreckage, abuse and loss they have experienced.
I see in the Bible that God revealed Himself in the Genesis account as the Creator (instigator, designer, strategist) of all things.
"1 IN THE beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth." Genesis 1:1 Amplified version
So instead of life and this existence on earth resulting from a cosmic happenstance or cosmological "sneeze" the Bible describes an infinitely creative and capable Person that intentionally imagines and initiates all life both visible and invisible realities. That's everything. Every weird and wonderful treasure from narwhals, dark matter, mitochondria, mosquitoes, personalities, consciousness, reproduction, inertia, covalent bonds, magnetism, visual and harmonic design elements, flavors and beyond recall the entirety of all human intellectual and sensory experiences. All the currently known, future discoverable, mysteries and wonders of our world are the work of Him the Genius, the first and finest artist. My urge to create, describe and ascribe worth (worship) is an element of my identity as human and a significant focus of the design that brings Him glory.
"Genesis 1:26-27 | AMP
26 God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness...27 So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them." Imago Dei ("image of God")
I am encouraged even mandated to build/create culture: to live life reflecting, imaging, recording, searching, emoting, and making much of the intricacies of God.
Through a regenerated heart and redemptive relationship of grace I enjoy fulfillment in creative processes and sharing my joy with others to the journey. My affections for God are continually stirred and strengthened as God reveals more of Himself through His Word, His Spirit and this life of creativity.
Fight (gotta get a crossbow)
I suggest Foremost Barbershop on Fulton. The owner and my preferred Barber, Drew, gives a great cut amidst his sage salt of the earth no frills life perspectives.
I really enjoy the Brandywine in East town, crazy good and large quantities.
Holland Tunnel Park at sunset and delicious food and drink at Vander Mill in Spring Lake.
I think the best thing about KCAD is the sincerity of the people that work and learn here. We work hard and desire deep things in life.
Pursue a life of authentic work, courage, and invest your heart in the eternal.
I have 3 kids. Creativity keeps me sane. I really enjoy drawing, performing bedtime stories, family relay races, backyard exercise, treasure hunts, and sharing my faith with my family in the normal day-to-day stuff.
