Kendall Gets Creative with Strategic Planning and Reaches Out to the Community for Answers
The best way to create impactful ideas focused on community engagement…is to make the community part of the process! Kendall College of Art and Design held a strategic planning session on Tuesday March 19 that did just that. In attendance were a variety of creative minds. The collaborative group of volunteers included students, faculty, school administrators, city planners, non-profit service agencies, policy makers…and many others who had a vested interest in how Kendall can help support and strengthen the local community.
Attendees were split into mixed groups where they were challenged with creating inspirational ideas that solve problems posed in the session. The problems were derived from a research initiative in which Kendall reached out to leaders in the community to understand the challenges they see coming for higher education. There were very few limits placed on the groups. They were only asked that the ideas have an impact on the community and present an opportunity for Kendall to partner with other organizations within the community. Many of the ideas could become unique, new elements in the work/life experience Kendall offers to its students in the future.
The big picture vision for the event was to begin connecting with thought leaders from the community and lay the foundation for what will become a growing relationship between Kendall College and the City of Grand Rapids. Kendall has already begun evaluating the best ideas and creating plans for implementation. The impact could be felt soon as this summer!
