Freelance Projects

Finding the right artist or designer for your project.

Once you post your freelance project on the Kendall Art and Design Job Bulletin, you may receive several responses from students and/or alumni. Here are some tips to help you choose the right candidate for the job.

  • Ask them for a resume in the job ad or call for an appointment.
  • Meet with candidates on your short list of viable candidates
  • Ask to view their portfolio or other sample work.
  • Look for style, ability to communicate ideas and neatness of work
  • Discuss in detail, your expectations of the final project and deadline
  • Choose a candidate that you feel can do the work, meet your deadline and shows a design or style that fits your project. If they show the talent it really comes down to your personal preference.
  • You can ask the candidate for references. Perhaps another client or faculty member.
  • Once you have awarded the project to the candidate negotiate a written agreement (contract). This agreement should outline these basic detail items, but the agreement can contain anything the client and designer agrees upon. Artists/designers will have their own contract.
    • The project, details
    • Names address, phone and emails of each party entering into the agreement.
    • Deadlines
    • Fee and expenses
    • Payment schedule
    • Ownership of art work
    • Copyright limitations
    • Project cancellation remedies
    • Signatures of both parties
  • Generally, when a client requests preliminary sketches or a mock-up before hiring the candidate, expect a fee for this work.
