Once you post your freelance project on the Kendall Art and Design Job Bulletin, you may receive several responses from students and/or alumni. Here are some tips to help you choose the right candidate for the job.
- Ask them for a resume in the job ad or call for an appointment.
- Meet with candidates on your short list of viable candidates
- Ask to view their portfolio or other sample work.
- Look for style, ability to communicate ideas and neatness of work
- Discuss in detail, your expectations of the final project and deadline
- Choose a candidate that you feel can do the work, meet your deadline and shows a design or style that fits your project. If they show the talent it really comes down to your personal preference.
- You can ask the candidate for references. Perhaps another client or faculty member.
- Once you have awarded the project to the candidate negotiate a written agreement (contract). This agreement should outline these basic detail items, but the agreement can contain anything the client and designer agrees upon. Artists/designers will have their own contract.
- The project, details
- Names address, phone and emails of each party entering into the agreement.
- Deadlines
- Fee and expenses
- Payment schedule
- Ownership of art work
- Copyright limitations
- Project cancellation remedies
- Signatures of both parties
- Generally, when a client requests preliminary sketches or a mock-up before hiring the candidate, expect a fee for this work.
