What is Digital Media?
Careers in Digital Media are considered to be some of the hottest new fields and one of the fastest growing areas of employment. Combinations of animation, sound, graphic art, video and text increase the impact of the message being delivered by electronic vehicles. Multimedia artists’ employment is estimated to grow by 2% by 2016. Because Digital media includes so many different areas of training, graduates of these programs are well-suited for more than one career path. Art direction, animation, storyboarding, game design and motion graphics are some popular options for multimedia experts. Digital Media careers may also include web design, CD authoring and video production.
Digital Media careers offer good salaries and creative, fast-paced work environments. Students choosing Digital Media should approach their job search in terms of “roles and skills,” rather than job titles, as new job titles in this field are emerging every year. Some recent additions include information architect, interaction designer, and animation engineer.
It is very important to keep your finger on the pulse of this industry by reading industry periodicals, reviewing digital media job sites and taking notes on cutting-edge companies like Pixar and Industrial Light and Magic, in order to track new occupations, industry software and skills. This is a field where the digital artist must plan to be in a continual state of learning new techniques, software and technical equipment.
