ArtPrize is the world's largest art competition. For a little over 2 weeks people flood downtown Grand Rapids to see new art and vote on the pieces they love. This year ArtPrize runs September 18 through October 6. On October 4, ArtPrize will be awarding $560,000 in prizes. Public vote will determine $360,000 of the awards, and juried awards determining the other $200,000.

"Designed to Win" is Kendall's 2013 ArtPrize exhibition, located in the Woodbridge N. Ferris building at 17 Pearl St. NW. The exhibition begins August 22 and runs through October 13.

About "Designed to Win:"

“So much of the talk surrounding ArtPrize seems to center on how a work of art can be designed to capture the popular vote. I find it an odd idea that art should not appeal to people. I do understand that what one finds appealing will change according to how sensitive one becomes to the nuances of skill, concept, and history. Still, people do queue up at the Louvre to see the Mona Lisa. The Pieta is a work that any viewer can find moving. And the throng around The Scream at MoMa last month was crushing. So what does it mean to create art that finds a wide group of admiring viewers? Who gets to decide what is good art and bad art and why? By mounting an exhibition on the theme "Designed to Win," Kendall will, I hope, create a conversation that is at the heart of this celebration, carnival and sandbox of creativity that we call ArtPrize.”
-David Rosen, President, Kendall College of Art and Design
