We all want vibrant, sustainable, and livable communities: historical buildings help. A stroll through Heritage Hill and past the Meyer May house makes walking more interesting because the buildings and landscape become storytellers.

Joining the past to the present and the present to the past is not always easy. Done thoughtfully, preservation can knit past and present together to create a whole greater than the sum of the parts.

Join a distinguished panel in conversation about the how history can create stronger communities, and ones that are not stuck in the past:

Kendall is honored to have Mayor George Heartwell, City of Grand Rapids and Brian Conway, Michigan State Historic Preservation Officer, to give opening and closing remarks.

Ron Bogle (Washington, DC), President of the American Architecture Foundation, home of the Center for Design and Cultural Heritage and partner in Save America’s Treasures—Connecting communities through buildings and sites that help us understand our history and shared cultural heritage.

Robert Theel, Chief Architect of General Services Administration Region 5 (Chicago)—Historic buildings that anchor communities and revitalize downtowns.

Tom Mathison, Senior Principal, TowerPinkster, and Gene Hopkins, Preservation Architect, HopkinsBurns Design Studio — Renewing the Woodbridge N. Ferris Building as a placemaker.

Joyce Lee, Trustee, Grand Rapids Art Museum — Moderator, with a brief overview of Renewal in Hong Kong through historic courthouse renovation.
