"We are all Products of Difference: the Impact of Cultural Diversity on my Life"
Presented by Dr. Jordan Fenton

February 3, 2014 | 11:30-12:30 | WNF 217

In this talk, Dr. Jordan Fenton addresses how cultural diversity changed his life and career. He discusses his distinct experiences in Nigeria, west Africa, while investigating the art, ritual, and performance of six masquerade societies. It was during this time he was initiated into each society, adopted as a son by a local king, conferred with the rank of chief, and honored with lengthy apprenticeships into an imaged and performed esoteric knowledge system. These honors and experiences expanded his world-view, left a lasting impact on his life, and continues to inspire his acceptance of difference. He challenges all to think of diversity as not a static idea or concept, but more broadly as a continual work-in-process and product of our human experience.
