Originality, Theft, and Everything In Between
Knockoffs: Originality, Theft, and Everything In Between
November 7, 2017-January 31, 2018
Opening Reception: Tuesday, November 7, 5-7pm
Conversations about authenticity in the realm of art and design are convoluted, at best. Words like “imitation,” “reproduction,” and “counterfeit” have been used to describe products in nearly all consumer fields, and the fixation on originality in the art market is equally pervasive.
This exhibition considers how the definition and history of “creating” has shifted over the centuries and also queries whether or not our experience of what we consider “authentic” has expanded.
Knockoffs have the capacity to both inspire and limit creation–will they enable us to thrive in our copy/paste culture?
