Sy Ellens (??63) will have a solo show, "Lakeside," which continues through Feb. 20 in the Robert Williams Gallery at the Box Factory for the Arts, 1101 Broad St. in St. Joseph, MI. Two highlights in this exhibit are "Serendipity" and an unlikely self-portrait that puts Ellens himself at the center of his landscapes.

"Serendipity," which is actually three large canvases, is by far the largest piece in this collection at 12 linear feet. The painting is an aerial view of a section of Michigan close to the Lake Michigan shoreline and includes dunes, islands and inland farm areas. It's the same piece Ellens created for and displayed at DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids for the ArtPrize competition. The self-portrait, which perhaps best highlights Ellens' skill with a brush, was originally created for a show at the Muskegon Museum of Art.
