Art Education Alum Integrates Art and Life in Chicago Residency

Posted August 30, 2017 in AlumniArt Education

For Joseph Wilcox, life is about finding art in everyday existence. The Chicago-based artist, educator, photographer, and Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University alumnus (’09, BFA Art Education) approaches his mission with fluidity, blending media, prying inspiration from the workaday, and meeting audiences where they stand.

From teaching art to high schoolers to distributing his own DIY creative writing and photography publication on Chicago’s L train, Wilcox’s practice has long been community-focused. Now, as the current artist-in-residence for the nonprofit Latitude Chicago, he’s developing a new publication of photographs taken in schools where he’s worked that explore the power structure inherent in those schools and, by extension, society at large.

Check out Latitude Chicago’s Q&A with Wilcox to learn more about the residency and his latest work.
