Furniture Design Major Wins Scholarship

Posted July 12, 2012 in Student

Furniture Design major Elizabeth “Liz” Moore is a self-described “furniture design nerd.” She grew up in High Point, NC, a mecca for designers, and furniture design is practically part of her DNA. Her great, great grandfather worked as a chair maker in the mountains of North Carolina. Around the turn of the 20th century, he left his home in Blowing Rock, pulling his sawmill behind a Conestoga wagon, and built a small chair factory on the banks of the Yadkin River. Her grandfather, father, and aunt all followed his lead and became furniture designers.

Having sawdust in her blood has paid off for Liz, winning her the WithIt Scholarship from the Women’s Leadership Development Network, a professional organization dedicated to encouraging and developing leadership, mentoring, education and networking opportunity for professional women in the home and furnishings design industries.

Before she returns to complete her senior year at Kendall, Liz is working at Otto & Moore Furniture Company in High Point. It’s no coincidence that she and the company bear the same last name: her grandfather founded the firm, and her father is president.

Needless to say, the scholarship money will come in handy, but Liz is more excited about the opportunities that come with it. She will be able to attend the annual WithIt conference, free of charge. She attended last year’s conference as a student ambassador, and is looking forward to renewing connections, as well as making new ones. And, WithIt is assigning a professional to mentor Liz, guiding her through the conference. She also received a one-year membership to WithIt.

Upon graduation Liz hopes to work in an independent furniture design firm, which would allow her to design for several manufacturers.
