KCAD Faculty Members Cross Boundaries for Collaborative Presentation at CEA Annual Conference

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University Graphic Design Professor Angela Dow and General Education Professor Dr. Susanna Engbers recently collaborated to compose and present a paper at the 2017 College English Association (CEA) Annual Conference in Hilton Head, S.C.

Titled “Narrative Theory: A Bridge Between Two Departmental Islands,” the paper arose out of Dow’s and Engbers’ awareness that story and narrative were important elements of their respective pedagogies. Deciding to explore this overlap further, the pair conducted an activity in which Engbers introduced Dow’s Advertising Design class to elements of literature and literary analysis. The hope was that, by learning the devices used to unpack and understand works of literature, the students could more effectively use narrative techniques in their design work.

The results, which Dow and Engbers presented at the CEA Annual Conference, were overwhelmingly positive, indicating that the disconnect students often perceive between their major of study and other fields of knowledge could be effectively addressed through a process of reframing. The paper was voted “Best in Section” by conference organizers.

“Susanna and I hope that our collaboration will serve as inspiration for other KCAD programs to show students the ways in which many different fields of knowledge can play a significant role in their success,” said Dow.
