News Bites - Alum Lends Beautiful Illustrations to Poetry Compilation

Posted June 2, 2014 in AlumniNews BitesIllustration

Alum Lori McElrath-Eslick (’81, Illustration) is an established illustrator of children’s books, and she recently lent her talents to a new poetry compilation that traces a day in the life of a mother. Featuring work from noted poets Gary Soto, Lee Bennett Hopkins, Nikki Giovanni, and Eileen Fisher, among others, “Mommy Poems” presents both written and visual art that explores the complexity of motherhood in wonderfully human detail.

McElrath-Eslick used light and shadow to give the emotion of each piece of writing visual life, helping readers, especially young children, to connect to the poems in a deeper manner. The faces in the illustrations are given just enough detail to create a sense of identity, but are left vague enough to express the collective experience of motherhood.
