News Bites: Art Education Professor Explores Heroism in Exhibition at Saugatuck Center for the Arts

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) Art Education Associate Professor Donna St. John’s new solo exhibition, on display at Saugatuck Center for the Arts (SCA), wrestles with notions of heroism in contemporary society.

Tributes of Authentic Heroism: Investigation of Grace, Vision, Clarity & Purpose features a series of nine assemblages, each dealing with a man or woman who has been regarded as a hero in one way or another. Some of the individuals have a high public profile, while others exist in obscurity, but all balance their heroic acclaim with the flaws inherent in human nature.

In the context of an increasingly digital world, St. John’s work prompts the viewer to question the ways in which we honor and understand people who strive to better the human condition. She had a chance to discuss her work in-depth with members of the Sagatuck community through a “Meet the Artist” session.

During the exhibition’s run, St. John is also working with area high school and college students to help them explore and express their own thoughts on the theme of social justice. Students are creating assemblages of their own heroes that will be displayed at SCA once St. John’s work comes down.

“Seeing the students so passionate about using their artistic voice to cultivate societal change has been truly inspiring,” St. John says.

Tributes of Authentic Heroism: Investigation of Grace, Vision, Clarity & Purpose is on display through January 14, 2017. Click here for more information.
