News Bites: Illustration Student Unveils Portrait of Retired GR Police Chief

Illustration student Mary Bowen was recently able to use her talents to help honor retired Grand Rapids Police Chief Kevin Belk.

Commissioned by The Committee to Honor César E. Chávez to compose a portrait of Belk, Bowen created a beautiful drawing that captures the essence of a man who devoted his life to serving and protecting others. Bowen had the distinct pleasure of presenting the portrait to Belk at a special ceremony the Committee held in his honor.

Lupe Ramos-Montigny, Chair of The Committee to Honor César E. Chávezwas beyond thrilled to have been able to give such a special gift to Belk, who worked closely with the Committee throughout this career.

“Kendall College of Art and Design surpassed our expectations and our dreams,” she said. “We are indeed grateful.”
