News Bites: KCAD Professors Featured at 2014 Design Research Society Conference in Sweden
Graphic Design professor Angie Dow and General Education professor Susanna Engbers recently travelled to Ulmea, Sweden, where they presented their jointly authored research paper, entitled “Envisioning a Better Design Education: How Language Can Invite or Discourage Collaboration,” at the 2014 Design Research Society Conference.

The conference, which began in England in the early 1970’s, aims to engage in discussions and debates on the future directions of design and design research. Dow’s and Engbers’ paper was chosen through peer review process—a double blind review by an international review panel. Criteria included relevance to the conference itself; originality, quality, and rigor of the research; and the clarity of the presentation.
The pair concepted the paper’s core idea together and conducted research in late summer and early fall of 2013 with the help of KCAD faculty. “Writing the paper was an incredible collaboration between faculty from different disciplines,” said Dow. “It couldn’t have been done without the cooperation of our fellow faculty from most of the other disciplines at KCAD.”
An earlier version of the paper was also accepted into the School of Arts’ Collaboration in the Arts conference, and was presented in New York City in October of 2013.
The abstract and paper can both be found online and downloaded here.
