Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) Medical Illustration student Adrianna Allen has been awarded the grand prize in the 2016 National Space Society (NSS) Space Settlement Student Art Contest.

The contest asked students aged 13-25 to submit a realistic picture of what life would be like living and working in a space settlement, right down to the technologies used to support a community.

Allen’s piece, “Pioneers of the Cosmos,” depicts new parents and their baby sitting close together on a futuristic orbital space station with Neptune and its moon Triton just outside the window.

"As a Medical Illustration student I find great interest in producing art that has its roots in scientifically based themes. Any spare time I have is usually devoted to my hobby of learning about astronomy and astrophysics,” said Allen. “I am honored to be the recipient of this award and it is my hope that I can continue creating images that encourage scientific development.”

As part of Allen’s grand prize win, her piece will be published on the cover of the NSS magazine Ad Astra, and she’s also been invited to attend the International Space Development Conference in Puerto Rico later this year.
