News Bites: MFA Printmaking Grad Wins UICA Fresh Pick Award
Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University’s (KCAD’s) Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) has announced Eana Agopian, a 2016 graduate of KCAD’s MFA Printmaking program, as this year’s UICA Fresh Pick Award winner.
The award is given annually to a member of KCAD’s graduating class who shows a high level of talent and potential. Agopian will receive a solo exhibition at the UICA in conjunction with the award, as well as recognition on the organization’s website and social media platforms.
UICA staff selected Agopian after a comprehensive walkthrough of KCAD’s 2016 Annual Student Exhibition. Curator of Exhibitions Heather Duffy ('12, MFA Painting) was particularly impressed with Agopian’s thesis exhibition, which was shown in two parts, one at The Fed Galleries @ KCAD, the other at local boutique shop Have Company.
“Eana Agopian’s current body of work, ‘OCCULTATION: conceal / reveal,’ draws upon themes of alchemy, psychology, and various modes of sensual perception to explore magical and mysterious spaces and realms of the unknown. She embraces the unknown from the initial stages, allowing materials, process, and intuition to guide the work’s formation,” said Duffy. “The resulting series is a collection of collages, thread prints, photograms, and embroidered etchings; built layer upon layer, each one is distinct, and a reaction to the previous stage. To create this type of work is to welcome the natural power of metamorphosis, the distinct stages along the way, and the acceptance that outcomes are not always known.”
