Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) students Hong Hu, Matthew Johnson, and Eric Schroeder recently bested dozens of the nation’s top emerging furniture designers to be named finalists in the 2017 Bienenstock Furniture Library Design Competition.

Each year, the prestigious competition invites students from around the country to submit their best original furniture designs for a chance to win scholarship funding and a membership to the American Society of Furniture Designers. For 2017, entrants were asked to design a chair with striking aesthetics that could be feasibly produced on a mass scale.

Hu, Johnson, and Schroeder were among the eight finalists named out of 50 entrants from 15 different colleges and universities.

“In 2014, we included this competition as a project in our program curriculum for the first time. Since then, KCAD has had two first place winners and four finalists. This speaks volumes about the quality our students and the value of the Furniture Design program’s educational experience,” said Assistant Professor and Furniture Design Program Chair Monty Simpson.

Judges for the competition included Dudley Moore, Jr., Otto & Moore; Rick Schroeder, Stanley Furniture; Scott Coley, Scott Coley Designs; Royale Wiggin, Thayer Coggin; Danny Davis, Davis Furniture; Richard Frinier, Richard Frinier Designs; and Paul Brayton, Paul Brayton Designs.
