Type II Students Redesign Magazine
It‚??s not very often that students have the chance to redesign an actual publication, yet such was the opportunity given to Type II students.
The challenge was to redesign SOLACE‚?Ę magazine, which is distributed in every room of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, the JW Marriott Grand Rapids, and Downtown Courtyard by Marriott. SOLACE magazine provides over 450,000 readers with information on the best dining, cultural attractions, shopping, and entertainment. With its sophisticated design and quality editorial content, SOLACE‚?Ę tells compelling stories, introduces visitors to interesting local people and shares the area‚??s beauty through photography.
Eleven students faced the challenge of working with professional content, forcing them to confront real-life design problems, under the guidance of instructors Jake Richardson and Jill Overmyer. Pieces were judged by outside professionals Chuck Anderson from NoPattern, and Jason Murray from Kantor + Wassink, as well as by Kendall Graphic Design program faculty members Jason Alger, Angie Dow, John Koziatek, and Suzanne Jonkman.
The top five entries were then sent to Plenty Creative, the agency that creates SOLACE, which chose sophomore Amanda Mercer‚??s design as the winner. Amanda‚??s prize was a gift certificate for a Four Diamond package at the Amway Grand.
