Future of Footwear Awards - Outside Scholarship

Deadline: May 26, 2013

PENSOLE, in partnership with the nation’s largest footwear trade show, FN PLATFORM, and largest online footwear retailer Zappos.com, is about to launch its second annual FUTURE of FOOTWEAR Awards, a program and competition created to discover, develop and reward aspiring footwear designers worldwide.

Our mission is to provide aspiring footwear designers a platform to create their own brand and become the future of the footwear industry through the creation of a competition that starts with a hands-on, intensive, four-week footwear design master class at PENSOLE.

  • Here’s how it works:
  • PENSOLE will provide scholarships for 20 hand-selected aspiring footwear designers to experience PENSOLE’s rigorous “learn by doing” curriculum, where students are assigned projects in the following categories:

    • 1. Athletic—Footwear designed to help perform a sport or activity better
    • 2. Dress—Footwear designed to wear at formal events
    • 3. Kids—Footwear designed for kids of all ages
    • 4. Made in USA—Footwear designed for manufacture in the USA
    • 5. Sustainable—Footwear designed with recyclable materials and more efficient manufacturing processes

On the last day of the class 10 semi-finalists will be selected to have samples of their designs made and will be awarded a trip to Las Vegas to have their designs on display at the PENSOLE booth at FNPLATFORM, August 19-21, 2013.

Over the course of the first two days of the show, industry experts in attendance will vote for who will be crowned the PENSOLE|FUTURE of FOOTWEAR(www.futureoffootwear.com) in each of the five categories (total of five winners).

Companies such as Nike, Under Armour, Disney, Vans, adidas, Converse, Cole Haan, JORDAN and others have been a part of previous PENSOLE classes, and in the past two years nearly 40 PENSOLE graduates—design students who have participated in PENSOLE programs just like this one—have been placed in jobs with major brands worldwide.

The talent search ends on May 26th, 2013, so time is very important. You can visit Pensole Footwear Design Academy website for more information and/or to register.

The Shop Smart Scholarship - Outside Scholarship

    Deadline: June 16, 2013

Eleven years ago this fall, I was in college and struggling to balance the myriad expenses - from tuition to housing to supplies to fun - that so many other students struggle to balance every year. Part of my solution was to skip the school store and make my back-to-school purchases online. I found incredible deals. The savings were vital, as they often are. I felt compelled to share what I learned and that effort to spread the word about the tips, tricks, coupon codes and great deals I was finding led to Brad's Deals.

Recognizing that my experience was far from unique, Brad's Deals is pleased to announce the second annual Shop Smart Scholarship Competition to recognize, encourage and reward students whose college experience is enabled by remarkable frugality, ingenuity, effort and thrift.

The five finalists will receive a $2,000 scholarship for the 2013-2014 school year.
  • Scholarship requirements:
    • Write a 500 word essay explaining how your college experience is or will be enabled by remarkable frugality, ingenuity, effort or thrift. Example: one of many other things I did at school was buy a router and wireless cards (they were cutting edge then!) and sell wireless internet access to others in my building.
    • Break down your all-in educational costs (tuition, room, board, other) and how they are or will be paid. Note: given the "shop smart" theme, there is a bias against both high annual tuition costs and student loans.

Essays will be judged on the creativity of the money saving strategies described, along with the overall remarkableness of the author’s experience paying for school in the spirit of thrift.

  • Eligibility Requirements:
    • High school seniors and undergraduate students
    • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
    • Current enrollment
    • 3.0 GPA
    • Not open to residents of Rhode Island or Tennessee.
For more information, please visit the Brad's Deals website.

    First Freedom Center- Outside Scholarship

    Deadline: November 18, 2013

The First Freedom Student Competition is a first-semester national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. The competition is open to students in the United States and U.S. territories, and to American schools and American home-schooled students worldwide. We invite 9th - 12th grade students at all levels of academic placement to participate.

    ESSAY & VIDEO TOPIC

INTRODUCTION: On December 10, 1948, in the aftermath of World War II, the fledgling United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). It was the first international protocol to define the inalienable human rights of all people. As such, it has been enormously influential in the development of constitutions, treaties, national and international laws, and organizations that promote human rights. Article 18 of the UDHR declares: "Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion; this right includes freedom to change his religion or belief, and freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest his religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance."

Eleanor Roosevelt, widow of United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt, chaired the document's drafting committee. On the 10th anniversary of its adoption, she presented a booklet to United Nations Commissioners entitled, In Your Hands: A Guide for Community Action for the Tenth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the booklet's introduction she wrote: "Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world."

In 1998, 50 years after the passage of the Universal Declaration, the United States Congress enacted the International Religious Freedom Act, which outlines means of making religious freedom an important focus for American foreign policy. The Act reads in part, "Standing for liberty and standing for the persecuted, [it shall be U.S. policy] to use and implement appropriate tools in the United States foreign policy apparatus...to promote respect for religious freedom by all governments and people." Americans also sometimes wonder what they, themselves, can or cannot do - "close to home" - to advance religious freedom in distant lands.

  • TOPIC:
    • Should the advancement of freedom of religion be a part of U.S. foreign policy? If so, why? If not, why not? What challenges might the United States face in trying to advance religious freedom internationally? (Please support your arguments with academically respected sources that consider differing views.)
    • Does religious oppression half way around the world affect you and other citizens? If so, how? If not, why not?
    • How does Eleanor Roosevelt's statement that universal human rights begin in "small places, close to home - so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world" apply to you and the impact that you and your generation can have on the advancement of freedom of religion and conscience now and in the future, at home and abroad?

Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation - Outside Scholarships

The first Common Knowledge Scholarship was created in January 2000 for high school students in Norway, Michigan. Unlike traditional scholarship programs, the competition was designed to reward students who had well-rounded, practical knowledge, not just the strongest academic performers. The success of this first competition led to the creation of the Common Knowledge Scholarship Foundation (CKSF) in 2001.

Administered at the Fischler School of Education and Human Services at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL, CKSF has since developed a wide variety of scholarships in which high school, college, graduate students, and even parents can participate. The National Nursing Scholarship, the Bible Scholarship, and the CKSF Movie Scholarship are just a few of the scholarships that helped fuel CKSF's growth. With new, exciting scholarship quizzes being announced each month, more and more students, parents, and scholarship coordinators began to recognize CKSF as a unique, fun, and legitimate scholarship provider.

CKSF scholarship competitions consist of one or more quizzes with topics ranging from general "common knowledge" to specific academic subjects, books, websites, and even movies. Scores are based on a combination of time and accuracy. Students with the highest scores at the end of the competition win. There are no essays or long applications to complete and a single CKSF registration is good from high school all the way through college and graduate school.
