Kendall Youth Classes: Ages 12-17

These advanced courses are designed to introduce teenage students to more intricate art media as well as continue to improve their techniques and skills.

Following is a list of classes Kendall offers for ages 12-17. Check schedule of classes to confirm date, time, and availability.

ACRYLIC PAINTING

This beginning painting class will provide you with the opportunity to work with acrylic paints. Learn techniques such as textural painting, surface preparation and collage.

ADOBE DREAMWEAVER

Learn the basics of website design on Adobe Dreamweaver.

ADVANCED DRAWING

Continue to improve your drawing skill and ability to “see” while trying new drawing materials and techniques. Create works on a medium to large scale, using both the figure and still life as sources.

ADVANCED PHOTOGRAPHY

Become familiar with advanced techniques in Black and White Photography. Working with fiber based paper, you will experiment with the processes of tinting and toning, as well as medium and large format photography. Instruction in mounting, framing and displaying prints will also be provided.

ART OF THE GUITAR

Get to know and love your guitar. Starting with basics and focusing on the major chords, you will be introduced to a variety of music styles including folk, blues, and rock and roll. No previous experience necessary, but you must bring a guitar.

ART OF WHO-DUN-IT?

Become part of a crime solving team for a Gothic Victorian literary murder mystery reminiscent of Agatha Christie and Edgar Allen Poe. You’ll do a brief creative writing exercise to define the characters, the setting and the situation. Then you’ll draw, cut-out, and build the scene, creating your own diabolical diorama. Whodunit?

BEGINNING VIDEO GAME CHARACTER DESIGN DAY CAMP (Ages 14-17)

If you are interested in creating characters and stories for animation or video games, this is the class for you. Learn the basics of character design and story development. Improve your drawing skills to bring your characters to life, and create your own 2-D animation using Adobe Flash. Over this two-week course, you will learn the whole process of animation from the concept stage to the finished product, with the professional tools and skills used for modern 2-D cartoon and video game creation. Note: A CD or storage device is optional and not included in the course fee.

CHARCOAL FIGURE DRAWING

Gain experience with drawing the human figure from a live clothed model. You will learn about line weight, basic skeletal structure, proportion, gesture, composition, and charcoal drawing techniques.

COMIC INKING AND LETTERING TECHNIQUES

Explore the use of “perspective” in comics, as well with inking and lettering techniques. The final project will involve drawing, inking and lettering a sample comic page, scripted by the instructor.

CREATING COMICS FROM START TO FINISH

Go through the entire professional process of making a comic and create the best piece of art you’ve ever made. In this class you will learn the basic skills of drawing proportion, perspective, and expression. Using these skills, you will choose a character from your own mind or from popular culture, from which you will create a series of small layout sketches. Then you will create your final artwork, moving from pencils, to inks, to full digital color and text on Adobe Photoshop.

CREATING ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Make a CD of your own electronic music using some of today’s best software. It’s fun and easy, and no previous musical experience is required.

CREATIVE WRITING FOR ARTISTS

Learn to turn your feelings, stories, and lyrics into verbal pictures! Then, create your own booklet of creative writing, complete with illustrated pages.

DIGITAL DRAWING AND PAINTING

In the digital world, possibilities are endless. Using Adobe Photoshop and other software, learn skills and tricks that will change the way you do artwork. In this class we will cover everything from how to make a photo of you floating above a city or sidewalk to how to paint and color your photos and drawings using the computer.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Explore the basics of digital photography. Learn about custom and automatic settings. Take pictures, play with composition and subject matter. Learn about printing options and storages. You will review and discuss images in class. A digital camera is required for this class.

DRAWING BALLET DANCERS

Learn the vocabulary, positions, and elementary movements of classical ballet as you draw from live models experienced in that art form. You will study examples from other artists such as Degas, Sargent, and George Bellows who drew bodies in motion.

DRAWING THE NORTH AMERICAN SUPERHERO

Learn to build your own characters using the chalkboard step-by-step method. Then, beginning with the basics, ink your characters. You will be introduced to inking tools used by artists today, and you will be encouraged to develop your own drawing style. A detailed study guide will be provided.

DRAWING THE URBAN LANDSCAPE

Study the history of landscape drawing, both contemporary and historical, while working in an exciting urban environment. Develop an understanding of form, shape, line, and composition while exploring how colors move, blend, and create space. Travel to a variety of locations around the downtown area.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION FOR TEEN DESIGNERS

For teen designers, this course will teach you how to put your fashion ideas on paper. Create a fashion figure, render a variety of fabrics, and learn basic design elements of garments.

FUN WITH DIGITAL AUDIO

Make a CD of your own electronic music using some of today’s best new software. It’s fun and easy, and no previous musical experience is required.

HOW TO MANGA

Learn the ins and outs of character design and illustration in the distinctive style of Japanese animation and Manga. You will study the methods and techniques of figure drawing and creating expressive characters while discovering the rich history of this eastern art form and its many styles.

HOW TO MANGA II

Building on the foundations laid in Manga I, this class takes the basics of Japanese Manga-style figure drawing and turns up the action. In Manga II, you will learn to draw dynamic characters and action sequences, and begin to look at turning basic character designs into full-fledged Manga comics.

HOW TO MANGA III

Further develop skills you learned in Manga I and Manga II, and then begin the process of assembling a comic book.

HOW TO MANGA IV

Further expand upon skills learned in the previous Manga classes. In addition, use Adobe Photoshop for color, black, and white shading techniques.

IMPROV

Learn how to perform improvisational comedy, and how to think on your feet in this acting class. Much of the class will be devoted to improvisational ‘games’ such as those seen on “Who’s Line Is It Anyway?” and “Saturday Night Live.”

INSTALLATION ART

Learn about this postmodern sculptural art form. Look at slides of well-known contemporary installation art, and have fun creating some temporary installations of your own.

INKING THE NORTH AMERICAN SUPERHERO

This class will focus on the inking styles in comic books, and other media, both domestic and international. Beginning with the basics, you will then ink your own comic characters.

THE INKING STUDIO

If you are naturally drawn to the pen, this is the class for you. You will engage in a variety of ink techniques and practices, both traditional and contemporary, such as comic, ink still-life, and sumi-e. Hands-on demonstrations and exercises will encourage you to find your own style and interests in the uses of ink, while exploring new materials that encourage artistic growth and experimentation. Bring your interests, imagination and be ready to ink!

INTERMEDIATE PHOTOGRAPHY

Incorporate fine art into photography by experimenting with developing techniques. Create “effects” with print manipulation, time, exposure, and control of lighting. A 35mm camera is required for this course.

INTERIOR DESIGN FUN

Learn some of the basics about interior design, including space planning, lighting, color principles, architecture, and furniture arrangement. Discuss the possibilities for careers in interior design.

INTERNET CARTOONS

Use Adobe Flash to create your own animated cartoon. Buttons, animation short-cuts, scene management, and simple scripting will be the focus. Learn each tool in depth while creating short animations.

INTRODUCTION TO JEWELRY/METALSMITHING

Learn about the art of metalsmithing and jewelry fabrication, while crafting a finished piece in precious metal to wear or give as a gift. Learn designing, soldering, sawing, filing, buffing, polishing, incorporating stones into their settings, and finishing techniques.

INTRODUCTION TO JEWELRY CASTING

Learn three different styles of casting metal from the primitive sand casting to modern lost wax casting processes. Explore the properties of different non-ferrous metals including aluminum, bronze, and silver to make unique jewelry pieces.

INTRODUCTION TO PHOTOGRAPHY

Explore the basics of photography. Develop an “eye” for subject matter and composition, and learn to process and print black and white film. A 35mm camera is required for this course.

INTRODUCTION/INTERMEDIATE 3-D WORLD MODELING

Create 3-D worlds where rivers run through gorges, the sun sets over the ocean, or mist shrouded fields reveal mountain peaks. Use a computer and unleash your imagination. Adobe Photoshop and Bryce software will be used.

LANDSCAPE WATERCOLOR

Paint the town red! Experiment with various landscape compositions, using the medium of watercolor. Explore how other artists used this medium in the Art museum’s galleries. This class will be held outdoor, weather permitting.

THE MANDALA MEETS THE DIGITAL WORLD

A mandala, especially its center, can be used during meditation as an object for focusing attention. Using this principle, students will draw attention to their center using skills such as digital imaging, graphic design, scanning, and printing to various 2-D surfaces. Projects are designed to explore the integration of historical and everyday images, sketchbook ideas, and skills needed to decode visual messages in a cyber culture.

MAN, MYTH, AND MAGIC

Your imagination is the most essential tool in this class. Review the history of heroic fantasy, both recent tales, like Harry Potter, and more ancient legends like King Arthur and Hercules. Examine heroic storytelling formulae that make these stories work and then create your own.

MONSTERS, MUTANTS, AND MAYHEM

A different sort of class where you will study what makes monsters monstrous. Learn to draw monsters already in print, as well as creating your own. Through creative figure drawing explore how to draw characters with mutant powers. Then begin to structure hero versus villain fight scenes.

MURAL PAINTING

Students will learn about the elements of design and composition, as they work collectively on the creation of a mural that will be displayed in the college.

PAINTING WITH OILS

Explore oil painting in this class, suitable for beginners or more advanced oil painters. Learn about palette preparation, color mixing, surfaces, glazing, and much more. Subject matter will include still life, landscape, and portraiture.

PAPIER MACHE SCULPTURE

Explore three-dimensional construction, working with papier mache. Study examples in “Calder For Kids” at the Art Museum and use found and created materials to sculpt animal, human or abstract forms.

PAPERMAKING, BOOKMAKING, & CALLIGRAPHY

Learn the art of paper and book making with fun and natural materials like dryer lint, dried flowers and onion skins. Bind your handmade paper together to make a book complete with book covers of your own creation. This class will also include instruction in calligraphy.

PASTEL DRAWING

Apply the techniques of layering, blending and mixing color to portraits, still life compositions and landscapes, using pastels.

PEN, INK & WATERCOLOR

Using pen, ink, and watercolor, this class will teach you to have fun creating compositions while learning to paint with additives such as salt and alcohol to create the illusion of texture. Watercolor papers and other materials will be explored as you expand your technique and confidence with these mediums.

PHOTOSHOP: THE BASICS

Work with enhancement and manipulation of color digital photography on the Macintosh. Working knowledge of computers required.

PORTFOLIO PREPARATION

This class is designed to assist students who are preparing to apply to colleges of art and design. The focus will be on the development of drawing and design work that will be suitable for portfolio reviews and scholarship competitions.

PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY

Discover how to take interesting, creative and spontaneous portraits in and out of doors. Learn how to capture your subject’s personality, as well as how to enhance the quality of photos that you take of your family and friends. This class is designed for students who have completed the Introduction to Photography course.

PRINT, PRINT, POP

Pop art becomes larger than life as you explore the work of Pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg who worked in print based media and processes. You will learn techniques of print design and reproduction by exploring the concepts and techniques of Pop art.

PRINTMAKING

Rembrandt, Escher, and Durer were all printmakers. Learn several of the techniques used by these graphic artists, while developing your own style and methods.

PRISMAS PLUS

Learn how to use Prismacolor pencils to achieve rich detail in drawings and illustrations.

PUTTING THE “SUPER” INTO THE HERO

Learn techniques for drawing anatomy and dense muscle structure convincingly on male and female superheroes. You will learn at least ten dynamic poses. All comic styles are welcome in this class, including American, manga, and hybrids.

SCULPTURE

A beginning sculpture experience that will stretch the imagination. Explore three dimensional art by creating the human figure and abstract forms with clay, plaster and found objects. Study sculpture both inside and outside of the Art Museum.

SUPER HERO DRAWING

Enhance your ability to draw male and female superheroes in a variety of settings. Add power to action poses by learning how to illustrate muscle definition, motion, and character interaction.

SUPER HERO DRAWING II

For students who have completed the Super Hero Drawing I course. This course will focus on specific visual details like wings, machines, hard suits, space gear, and the like. You will also learn how to draw female superheroes in proportion.

SUPER SCULPEY CREATURES

Woodland creatures, leprechauns, dwarves, elves, fairies…you imagine it, you can make it! Using the product Super Sculpey, any creature can be sculpted. You will learn how to make sturdy wire armatures, mold the Sculpey clay into your desired form, and paint the hardened form to give the creatures stunning realism. And the best thing is that the whole thing can be hardened in your home oven!

SURREALIST PAINTING

Join the journey into the world of surrealist art while expressing and interpreting your own dreams/visions. Learn Surrealist techniques, games, and lifestyles of this movement as you create images of your own reality. You will be working with oil paints.

SWORDS AND SORCERY

Go back to the days of high adventure: the days when wizards and warriors ruled the world. You will become acquainted with basic figure drawing and apply it to constructing sword wielding, shield bearing fighters of a bygone age. Explore armors, sword design, helmets, weapons, and the magic users of this age complete with costumes and accessories. Bring your magic wands!

VIDEO GAME DESIGN

Learn basic skills on Adobe Flash, while creating your own interactive video game designs.

VIDEO GAME DESIGN II

Continue with the creation of your own video game designs, building on the skills you gained in Video Game Design I.

VIDEO POETRY

Produce and explore alternatives to traditional television media! You will develop technical skills and use your own distinctive innovations to shoot, perform in, edit, and produce your own short video using imovie software. Please come in with a mini-DVD. Previous experience with video not required.

VIVID CHROME: CARS & CYCLES

Learn the basics of capturing the likeness of reflective surfaces such as chrome and glass on cars and cycles with colored pencil. Discover this world of shapes and color in pencil which is like no other. This exciting medium is portable, clean, and versatile. Photographic subject matter will be provided.
