Ages 6-9

Kendall Youth Classes: Ages 6-9

Have fun learning how to draw, paint, and create with clay! These classes help students ages 6-9 develop their creative skills through fun, explorative art lessons. Creative art-making teaches children about important art concepts such as color, composition, form and texture.

Following is a list of classes Kendall offers for ages 6-9. Check schedule of classes to confirm date, time, and availability.

AFRICAN SAFARI

Go on an imaginary safari! Sketch African animals with a variety of drawing materials. Learn to observe and create the textures and patterns of various animals using charcoal, pencil, and marker.

ANIMAL DRAWING

Draw animals from the seas, forests, and grasslands, using line, shape, texture, and color.

CALDER’S CIRCUS

Learn about the circus figures created by Alexander Calder, and make some of your own using clay, cardboard, wire, paint, and other materials.

CARTOON ANIMAL CRACKERS

For beginners, you will learn some of the basics of drawing before jumping into the world of cartoon animals with both feet. You will draw hippos, crocodiles, fish, zebras, toucans, monkeys, and parrots, just about any animal you can catch.

CARTOON ANIMALS FROM A-Z

Make a cartoon drawing of an animal for every letter of the alphabet. Use color pencils to finish your drawings.

CARTOON CARAVAN

Use line, shape, and color to create cartoon characters based on movies, books, and television.

CARTOONING

Learn to draw your own comic book action characters.

COLORS OF THE RAINBOW

Learn all about the world of color! Mix color and learn to use it in your artwork. Look at examples of master artists. You will compile your own color theory book.

CREATE WITH CLAY

Squish, shape, and roll clay into objects straight out of your imagination. Then see how creative you can become with painting and glazing techniques.

DINOSAURS AND REPTILES

From Tyrannosaurus Rex to rattlesnakes, learn to draw these smooth and scaly creatures on large paper, adding color and realistic detail.

DRAWING OBJECTS FROM NATURE

Improve the way you see and draw simple objects from nature, such as flowers, fruit, rocks, bones, shells, and vegetables. Explore shape, line, and value, and learn about the art of Georgia O’Keefe and others who drew from nature.

EXCITING EXPRESSIONS

Use your own image in the mirror, photos, and sketches by artists, to learn how to draw faces that show expression. Explore the use of color and detail to create mood and emotion.

FUN WITH FOUND OBJECTS

Use objects found around the house to create fun and useful sculptures. Thumbnail drawing, brainstorming, painting, decorating techniques, and group participation will be experienced in this class. Take home a rain stick, piñata, and a mask, hat or jewelry.

LIONS, TIGERS, BEARS

Draw lions, tigers, bears, and more animals while learning about how and where they live. Move from simple outlines and shapes to development of textures, patterns, and shading to bring your drawings to life.

MONSTER PLAYHOUSE

A class for those who are tired of the ordinary. Travel to the imaginary world of monsters and see what indeed makes them so monstrous. Thin ones, fat ones, tall ones, flat ones. Monsterville is where you’ll be, and you will learn to draw all you can see. Fur, nails, bubbles, balloons, small and goofy, or big oversized goons. No guarantees, but we’ll try to be back the same afternoon.

ORIGAMI

Learn to make basic folded origami objects. During every class students will learn a bit about Japanese history and culture and make two objects such as balloons, cups, hats, and frogs. Students will eventually learn to make mobiles and dioramas using their origami objects and figures.

PAINTING PLUS

Become a painter! You will learn about color mixing and blending on a palette, while creating your own color combinations. Paint a variety of subjects, both real and imagined.

PASTEL PAINTING

Create beautiful painterly effects using chalk and oil pastels. Make colorful paintings and drawings of still life, landscape and portraits.

PORTRAITURE

Study examples of famous portraiture to learn how to draw the head and its features. Experiment with proportion and composition, while studying the basic elements of portraiture.

RAINFOREST TREASURES

Learn about the rainforests of the world and create drawings, paintings, and 3-dimensional works which represent its plants, animals, and human beings.

THE 3Ps: PENS, PENCILS AND PAPER

Learn how to draw objects, animals, and people in proportion, working with shape, texture, and pattern. Develop your skills with both pen and pencil.

3-D CREATURES FROM THE SEA

Explore a variety of techniques in the creation of 3-dimensional sea creatures using wire, clay, papier-mache, wood, and paper. Subjects will include octopi, fish, seaweed, sharks, treasure boxes, lobsters, seahorses and jellyfish.

TREASURE ISLAND

Discover the wonders of ships at sea and the islands to which they sail. You will create drawings and paintings by building upon foundational drawing and observation skills. You will practice sketching, shading, design, color, composition, and vocabulary.

UNDER THE SEA

Expand your drawing and painting ability while studying the sea as your subject. From starfish to whales, your focus will be on shape, shadow, and light.

WATERCOLOR WONDER

Using your own watercolor palette, discover how to create unique compositions on paper. Experiment with a variety of techniques while composing abstract and realistic paintings of still lives and simple subjects.

WATERCOLOR MAGIC

Become a painter! The focus of this class will be on watercolor techniques. You will also further your understanding of color mixing, and creating your own palette. By the end of class you will know how to create portraits of your family, friends, and even yourself!

WEAVING NATURALS

Create bowls, containers and baskets, using natural materials such as corn husks and cat tail reeds. Experiment with basic weaving and design techniques.
