Day Camps

Spend hot summer days doing cool things.

Day camps are offered 9:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. A brown-bag lunch from home is suggested. Kendall staff will supervise activities during lunch break. PLEASE NOTE that regular daytime classes are also held Monday through Friday in June and July! To register for a Day Camp online, click here.

Video Game Design

Develop your own video game design using Adobe Flash! Class is suitable for beginners or those with some experience designing games.

Drawing Across the Universe

Ages 8-12

Jump aboard our day camp to explore the universe through drawing! You will be introduced to several different artists, inspiring you with images of their own drawings and teaching you the techniques to achieve your own masterpieces. One full-week instructor will provide guidance and leadership from day to day. Topics will include drawing cartoon characters, representational drawing, drawing fashions for video and animation, designing your creative space, drawing the Greek gods, and drawing online.

Young Architects

July 15-19, 2013
Ages 8-12

Step up to the drafting table and try your hand at being an architect! Learn about skyscrapers, famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, and sustainable design. Practice designing online, and then plan a house on your own that you’ll build from the ground up! You will draw, paint, and work with blocks, cardboard and clay to create a model of your building design.

NEW! Architecture

Ages 13-17

Come explore the in’s and out’s of architecture. This course will teach you the process of how a building is created from the design stage through the finished construction phase. We will look at many different ways to communicate design through models, computer based programs like AutoCAD and SketchUp, and hand drawing. No experience is needed, only a love of architecture.

Travel with Your Camera

Ages 13-17

Travel around Kendall with your camera learning about all the features and functions of your digital camera, possibilities for special effects, controlling lighting, and more. You will download some of your photos to a computer to continue your art making with Adobe Photoshop.

Use your own personality, qualities, likes, and dislikes, to design a graphic brand that expresses you! You will use brainstorming, sketching, Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create a logo, poster, cd cover, and more!

Jump into this class with both feet! You won’t want to miss a second of the creativity. Projects will include: painting of a swamp thing, clay fish, sea turtle painting, stuffed sharks, undersea 3-D painting, ABC book of underwater creatures, and paintings of frogs, flies, and sea monsters.

Project-a-Day Sewing

Learn everything you need to sew simple projects by hand and machine. Make something new every day of the camp, including a handbag, simple skirt or pants and stuffed animal.

Stop Motion Animation

Ages 10-14

Teamwork helps you communicate your ideas more effectively in art. Building on the story-boarding process: brainstorming, sketching, acting, and discussion, you will create a Play-doh project, which you will film and animate. The animation process includes set design, character design, directing, operating a camera, and editing. You will have an opportunity to use some of the latest software for your final production.

Digital Movie Making

Learn the entire production cycle of movie making including planning, shooting, and editing your own video project using some of today’s best software. Your own video camera is required for this class.

Flowers have always been a popular subject of art and artists. Learn about artists who created flower paintings and make your own art and crafts around this theme to wear and display. Projects include: watercolor paintings, fabric flowers, necklace or bracelet, flower collage, stencil painting, painted clay pots, flower batik, bleach pen t-shirt, flower journal, photo frame, and paper flower bouquet.

Restyled Fashion

Ages 13-17

Recycle old garments and found objects such as soda caps or plastic bags into altered couture! Examples include making old jeans into a jacket, or a garment purchased at Goodwill into something new to wear! You will sketch your fashion ideas first and then go to the sewing machine to create them.

Explore the various fields of design and learn some of the methods used to creatively solve design problems. Improve drawing and perspective skills to clearly communicate your ideas on paper.

Pokemon Block Party

Learn foundation drawing techniques through the process of Pokemon construction. Start with simple shapes and progress to more complicated ones. You are encouraged to bring in cards to draw from and share with others.

Pre-College Drawing

Ages 13-16

Think attending art college is in your future? Get a jump on the competition by building a portfolio of drawings based on observation. Focus of the basics of composition and rendering in this day camp which will include studies based on still life and clothed models. Class will also include drawing on location around Grand Rapids.
