KCAD + ArtPrize 10

The Sum of Its Parts

September 12, 2018 –October 7, 2018
Location: Sculpture Garden at KCAD, 17 Pearl St. NW
Jason Peters' sculpture against a dark sky. A metal scaffolding structure with lighted, curving forms snaking through.

Jason Peters’ installation employs the use of ready-made objects into complex sculptures. The artist creates rather extraordinary installations through the use of plastic buckets and construction scaffolding. These structural materials become separated from their prior lives and are repurposed in ways that are no longer utilitarian, but rather conceptual.

Peters’ plastic buckets are stacked within each other to form a dynamic, serpentine shape that winds through a scaffolding armature and creates a sense of movement through its repetitive forms. Through this repetition, chaos is created within an ordered structure, but gives way to a sense of instability and change.

This activation of the sculpture garden on KCAD’s campus disrupts the clean, classic Beaux-Arts architecture of the Woodbridge N. Ferris Building. As day turns to night the sculpture yields a wonderful LED illumination and once again shifts our understanding of space by creating something unexpected in a familiar location.
