Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) graduate students Bohan Li (MFA Printmaking) and Emily Mayo (MFA Drawing) have each been awarded a scholarship to attend the Golden Apple Art Residency at Golden Apple Studio in Maine this summer.

Founded by KCAD alumna Shelley Stevens (’00 BFA Painting; ’04 MFA Painting) and her husband, Golden Apple Studio is located in a secluded part of Maine and provides artists with an immersive and tranquil environment in which to conduct creative research, write, and make new work. Each year, two KCAD graduate students are selected by the Golden Apple Art Residency for scholarships that cover the full cost of a two-week summer residency.

Students who apply for the scholarship must submit a statement of purpose and samples of their work. Stevens receives a large number of submissions each year, and evaluates applicants on their conceptual and technical skill, the strength of their original ideas, and the focus of their proposed projects at the residency.

“It is always a difficult job to jury the Golden Apple Scholarship Competition, given the fact that there is always a pool of such qualified applicants from KCAD, and this year was no exception,” she says. “I tend to look for a spark of passion as well as a unique perspective, which was present in the work of both Emily and Bohan.”

Li and Mayo are now looking forward to focusing on their artistic practice in a nurturing environment with immediate access to Maine’s beautiful natural scenery.

Mayo creates large drawings relating to the stories of place.

“I am looking forward to stretching my imagination in a completely new landscape to see what stories reveal themselves to me, and in what ways I can tell them,” she says. “I am excited for the opportunity to submerge myself in a new and different environment to see what imagery comes out of it.”

Li has been exploring the inner lives of people through his work.

“To me, each person is composed of two independent islands: there is a “real” world island, and an inner world island,” he says. “The inner world island is often free, and contains the liberation of thoughts and emotions.”
