News Bites: Trio of KCAD Alumni Selected for Experience GR Outdoor Art Project

Posted August 5, 2016 in AlumniNews BitesIllustrationPhotography

Three Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) alumni will have their artwork displayed on billboards across West Michigan as a part of Experience GR’s Art Outdoor Project 2016.

Bud Kibby (’13, Photography), Samantha Luotonen (’15, Illustration), and John Van Houten (’14, Illustration) will be featured along with two other area artists on billboards in Saugatuck, Grand Rapids, Portland, and Lansing.

This is the second year of the Experience GR Art Outdoor Project and the first year the initiative has been supported by KCAD’s Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA). The submitted artwork centered around the theme “My Grand Rapids” and only five winners were chosen. Work by the artists will also be for sale online while the billboards are up.

Kibby will have his piece “Height” featured on a billboard.

“It feels fantastic to be a part of such a wonderful competition with real results for personal exposure and to be acknowledged for my years of study in a public manner,” he says. “I feel as though this is an indicator that my career path is moving at a successful trajectory.”

Luotonen, the 2015 recipient of KCAD’s Excellence Award in Illustration, will be showcasing a combination of three of her pieces, “Cheeseburger,” “Temaki Sushi,” and “Chicken and Waffles.”

"When I received the email that I had won, I was shocked and thrilled to be able to participate in something that represents Grand Rapids,” she says.

VanHouten will have his piece “Medical Mile” featured in the initiative.

“It's a good feeling to know that hundreds, maybe thousands of people will see my artwork along the highway and I cannot wait to see it in person,” he says. “I hope that it will entice more people to visit Grand Rapids, whether they visit the subject of my painting, the Medical Mile, or other areas of town. I'm excited for the exposure and look forward to the new work it may bring me.”

The billboards will be on display from this August through this September. They’ll be seen by travelers throughout West Michigan during the peak of the travel season and just as the city of Grand Rapids prepares for ArtPrize 8.
