Posted March 22, 2017 in AlumniPainting

Kendall College of Art and Design of Ferris State University (KCAD) alumna Yvette Cummings (’00, BFA Painting) was recently announced as the winner of the 2016 701 CCA Prize by the 701 Center for Contemporary Art (701 CCA) in Columbia, S.C.

The third annual competition seeks to recognize emerging artists in South Carolina who are creating exemplary original work. All artists living and working in the state who are under the age of 40 are eligible to enter.

Cummings, who lives in Conway, S.C. and teaches art at Costal Carolina University, was selected out of a large and highly competitive pool of applicants by jurors David Gariff, senior lecturer at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; Jonell Logan, independent curator and founder of 300 Arts Project LLC in Belmont, N.C.; and Jennifer Smith, gallery & marketing director of The Arts Center of Greenwood in Greenwood, S.C.

As winner of the CCA Prize, Cummings received a six-week paid residency at 701 CCA, as well as a solo exhibition at 701 CCA.

“This award will present me with the opportunity to have concentrated time to devote to my work away from the demands of teaching and family life for the first time in many years,” says Cummings. “I am really excited to continue to work on my ‘Voyeur’ series and have the space to expand some experimental sculptural works as I prepare for upcoming solo exhibitions.”

Cummings’ work has previously been included in over 30 exhibitions throughout the United States, including exhibitions at Women Made Gallery in Chicago, the Anderson Arts Center in Anderson, S.C., and the Durham Art Guild in Durham, N.C.
